Here at Clear Creek Animal Hospital, we are proud to offer dental services for our clients.
Even though it is so important, dental disease is one of the most overlooked disease in pets. The disease can travel through the bloodstream if it is left untreated and cause many problems, including heart, liver, and kidney disease.
The worst part of dental disease is the prevalence of the disease. It is estimated that around 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats over three years old have some form of the disease. Even though pets are extremely well taken care of, the number of those suffering from dental disease is astonishing.
There are multiple reasons dental disease is such a wide-spread problem
- As owners, we rarely look in our pet’s mouths, especially in the back where a lot of dental disease is hiding
- Pets are experts at hiding pain and rarely show signs of the discomfort caused by dental disease
- Most owners have never been educated about the important of dental health to their pet’s overall health
At your pet’s annual and semi-annual exam, your veterinarian will look inside your pet’s mouth to try to catch any disease early. They will also give you advice on the best way to care for their pet’s teeth.
Your veterinarian may recommend a professional dental cleaning under anesthesia. We scale and polish your pet’s teeth just like your dentist cleans. We also perform dental xrays on all dental patients to look for tooth or bone decay that may be taking place beneath the gum line.
It is important to maintain teeth brushing and dental chews to keep dental disease from coming back after a professional cleaning. Some common signs of dental disease:
- Discolored teeth
- Bad breath
- Difficulty eating
- Blood in the mouth
Please schedule an examination as soon as possible if you notice any of these signs.
